At the scene of the occurrence, members of the New York City Police Department gathered up some seven fire-arms and many expended shells. Apparently, whilst he was in Italy, Bonanno had already been introduced to a life of organized crime and worked for the Italian Mafia. But many investigators believe that he went into hiding, partly in fear for his life and partly to evade a government subpoena to testify before a grand jury. In 1983, Joe Bonanno, now 78 years old, did something no godfather had ever done. In 1980, at the age of 75, he was convicted for the first time, on a federal charge of conspiracy to obstruct justice. In 1957, Bonanno was among the scores of underworld chieftains nabbed by cops during a secret conference at Apalachin, N.Y. Joe Bonanno adored him, and he became something of a substitute father for Joe. A family of criminals that operated across the five boroughs of New York. Joseph Bonanno Jnr studied animal husbandry at the University of Arizona, and later owned a 20 acre ranch in California where he raised horses. Bonanno had also promoted his son Bill (left) in February 1964, into the position of consigliere, or counselor, the number three position in his Crime Family, overlooking many more senior men within the group. His parents emigrated to the United States when he was 3 years old and lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, for about 10 years before they returned with their son to Sicily. Upon his return to New York he was facing pressure not just from his family but also from the law, as the US Attorney at the time served him a subpoena to testify about organized crime before a jury. He was indicted on a charge of conspiracy to obstruct justice by refusing to testify before the grand jury. So when he was 17, he decided to move from his hometown of Castellammare del Golfo to Palermo, the capital city of Sicily. Childhood & Early Life. For 19 months, Bonanno was off the New York stage. But Joe Jnr had other careers in mind. Charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice, a jury found him guilty of attempting to block a grand jury investigation into alleged money laundering through companies owned by his sons. If Bonanno and Chin go to war, Bonanno won't bother to pay his tax and will happily sell straight to Bumpy.
